How GPA Is Calculated

GPA is a credit-weighted average. Each course grade contributes quality points equal to the grade-point value multiplied by the course credits, and cumulative GPA is total quality points divided by total attempted credits.

This calculator works backward from that formula. Enter your current cumulative GPA, completed credits, target cumulative GPA, remaining credits, and GPA scale to estimate the average GPA needed across those remaining credits.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this calculator when you want to know the average performance required across upcoming courses or remaining credit hours to reach a cumulative GPA goal. It is useful for semester planning, scholarship requirements, academic probation planning, or graduation targets.

If you need the percentage score required on one final exam in a single course, use the grade calculator instead.

Common Mistakes With GPA

  • Mixing course grades with cumulative GPA: This tool expects GPA values, not assignment percentages.
  • Leaving out credits: Include all completed credits that count toward the cumulative GPA you are trying to change.
  • Using the wrong scale: Set the GPA scale to match your school, such as 4.0 or 5.0.
