Why number bonds matter for addition and subtraction
A number bond is a compact way to show that a whole can be composed from two parts and decomposed back into them. That sounds simple, but it is the structure behind a large share of early arithmetic. A child who knows that 8 and 2 make 10 can use the same relationship to answer 8 + 2, 2 + 8, 10 - 8, and 10 - 2 without treating them as four unrelated facts.
Secure bonds to 10 also make larger calculations easier. For 8 + 5, a child can split 5 into 2 and 3, use 2 to complete 10, then add the remaining 3. For 13 - 5, the same child can step back 3 to reach 10 and then subtract the remaining 2. The picture on a number-bond worksheet is therefore not decoration; it rehearses the part-whole structure that makes those mental strategies possible.
