The mirror order that makes duplex flashcards work
Picture a 2x4 front page with card 1 in the top-left box and card 2 in the top-right box. When a portrait sheet turns like a book, those two physical positions trade sides. Definition 1 must therefore be placed in the top-right box on the back page, while definition 2 goes in the top-left box. If the back page is left in ordinary reading order, every definition lands behind its neighbour. The sheet can look polished and still be unusable.
Long-edge duplex printing mirrors columns but keeps rows in place. A 2x4 row numbered 1, 2 becomes 2, 1 on the back. A 3x3 row numbered 1, 2, 3 becomes 3, 2, 1. Short-edge printing does the other job: it mirrors rows but keeps columns in place, so the bottom row moves to the top of the back page.
- The words are not mirrored. Your printer turns the back page into reading position. Only the boxes move.
- Blank boxes are mapped too. On a partial final sheet, a blank front slot produces a blank slot at the matching mirrored position on the back.
- Every sheet is its own pair. The printable order is front 1, back 1, front 2, back 2. A duplex printer puts each consecutive pair onto one physical sheet.
