How This Tool Works
The Test Curve Calculator allows you to visualize the impact of different grading methods on your scores. Instead of simply calculating a percentage, it shows exactly how four distinct statistical approaches transform raw data.
You can input either a single score or an entire dataset (e.g., 35 student submissions). The calculator then applies the following transformations:
- Flat Curve: Scores remain exactly as they were (no change).
- Square-Root Curve: Moderately compresses the score range, giving a slight boost to lower scores.
- Scale-to-Highest Curve: Rescales all grades so that the highest raw score achieves 100%, often inflating the perceived difficulty of the test.
- Bell/Z-Score Curve: Adjusts scores to fit a normal distribution (the bell curve), ensuring the average falls near the expected mean, regardless of the actual performance spread.
By comparing these four outputs side-by-side, you can understand the mathematical shift applied by each method.
