Why a ten frame makes a number visible

Ask a child to look at seven loose counters and the first response may be to count them one by one. Put the same seven counters in a ten frame and the structure does part of the work: one row of 5 is full, 2 counters sit on the next row, and 3 spaces remain. Seven can now be seen as 5 and 2, as 10 minus 3, and as one more than 6 without moving a single counter.

That is the practical value of the frame. It gives every quantity the same five-wise layout, so the learner can compare arrangements instead of starting a fresh count each time. The empty cells matter as much as the filled cells because they show how far the number is from the next useful benchmark.

  • Within 5: a five frame keeps the whole quantity in one short row.
  • Within 10: a ten frame makes 5 and 10 visible at the same time.
  • Within 20: a double ten frame shows a full group of 10 beside the part that remains, so 14 reads as 10 and 4 rather than fourteen unrelated objects.

Keep the filling order consistent: left to right across the first row, then left to right across the next. Random counter positions turn the task back into a counting exercise and hide the relationships the frame is meant to reveal.

Choosing a five, ten, or double ten frame

Choose the smallest frame that holds every number in the lesson. A larger frame is not automatically more advanced; it can add empty space that distracts from the relationship you want the learner to notice.

  • Five frame: use it for first counting collections, making 5, and comparing numbers such as 3 and 4. One row is easy to scan and leaves room for large physical counters.
  • Ten frame: use it for number bonds to 10, one more and one less, and questions such as How many spaces are empty? Seven counters immediately invite the equation 7 + 3 = 10.
  • Double ten frame: use it once a full 10 is meaningful. Fill the first frame before the second so 13 appears as 10 + 3. This supports teen-number language and prepares the ground for addition that crosses 10.

Move between frame sizes deliberately. Show 4 on a five frame and a ten frame, then ask what stayed the same and what changed. The quantity is still 4; only the benchmark and the number of empty spaces changed.

Three routines that move from objects to equations

A printed frame works best when the child talks about what is visible. The aim is not to fill boxes neatly; it is to connect an arrangement, a spoken number, a numeral, and a number sentence.

  1. Build, flash, explain. Place counters on a blank frame, show it for two seconds, then cover it. Ask How many did you see? and How did you know? An answer such as I saw 5 and 2 is more useful than I counted to 7.
  2. Complete the benchmark. Print a completion frame for 7 with 4 counters already shown. The learner adds 3, says 4 and 3 make 7, then looks at the remaining 3 spaces and says 7 and 3 make 10. One frame supports two related equations.
  3. Match three representations. Put a filled frame, a numeral card, and a simple equation on the table. The learner matches all three, then changes one counter and updates both the numeral and equation.

Printing large frames without wasting ink

A ten frame needs enough space for a small hand, not just enough space to remain legible. Four ten frames per page keep each cell about 18 mm wide on both Letter and A4 paper. Two per page are better for counters, cubes, stamps, or finger tracing. Six per page suit pencil dots and independent worksheet practice.

  • Use four or fewer double ten frames. Each item has 20 cells, so a six-item layout would shrink the cells or force a second sheet.
  • Print at 100% scale. The page is already measured for the chosen paper size. Extra Fit to page scaling can make the cells smaller than the preview suggests.
