Why a ten frame makes a number visible
Ask a child to look at seven loose counters and the first response may be to count them one by one. Put the same seven counters in a ten frame and the structure does part of the work: one row of 5 is full, 2 counters sit on the next row, and 3 spaces remain. Seven can now be seen as 5 and 2, as 10 minus 3, and as one more than 6 without moving a single counter.
That is the practical value of the frame. It gives every quantity the same five-wise layout, so the learner can compare arrangements instead of starting a fresh count each time. The empty cells matter as much as the filled cells because they show how far the number is from the next useful benchmark.
- Within 5: a five frame keeps the whole quantity in one short row.
- Within 10: a ten frame makes 5 and 10 visible at the same time.
- Within 20: a double ten frame shows a full group of 10 beside the part that remains, so 14 reads as 10 and 4 rather than fourteen unrelated objects.
Keep the filling order consistent: left to right across the first row, then left to right across the next. Random counter positions turn the task back into a counting exercise and hide the relationships the frame is meant to reveal.
