Choosing between d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20 dice

The name of a classroom die tells you how many possible outcomes it has. A d6 has six faces, while a d20 has twenty. More faces do not make a die better; they give you room for a longer list. Choose the smallest shape that holds every choice so the finished die is quick to build and easy to read.

  • d4, tetrahedron: four broad choices such as character, setting, problem, and ending categories. It lands with one point facing upward, so read the value beside that top point.
  • d6, cube: the easiest net for younger pupils to cut and glue. It is the best choice for standard pips, story prompts, movement breaks, and simple operations.
  • d8, octahedron: useful when six choices are too few but the class still needs large, readable triangular faces.
  • d10, trapezohedron: a natural fit for digits zero to nine, place-value work, percentages in tens, or ten vocabulary items. This generator numbers numeral faces from 1 to 10; use custom faces if you want 0 to 9.
  • d12, dodecahedron: enough room for months, clock numbers, twelve times-table prompts, or a larger bank of discussion questions.
  • d20, icosahedron: suited to revision lists, twenty-word vocabulary sets, probability work, and older pupils who can manage a net with many small triangular joins.

The face-size control measures a regular edge on d4, d6, d8, d12, and d20. On the kite-faced d10 it measures the longer edge. The tool limits the maximum automatically so the complete net and its tabs remain on one Letter or A4 sheet.

How to make a paper die that survives a lesson

Accurate folds matter more than extra glue. Start by cutting the solid outline with every tab still attached. Before folding, place a ruler on each dashed line and run an empty ballpoint pen, blunt craft tool, or the back of a butter knife along it. This shallow score gives the card a clean hinge and keeps the faces from bowing.

  1. Pre-fold every dashed line inward. Include the base of every glue tab. Sharp preliminary folds let the polyhedron find its own shape.
  2. Dry-fit the net. Bring the faces together without adhesive and notice which two cut edges form each seam. On d12 and d20, this quick rehearsal prevents the last face from becoming trapped outside.
  3. Use a thin layer of glue. A glue stick or a small amount of PVA spreads more evenly than a puddle. Put the tabs inside so the solid cut edges meet cleanly.
  4. Close one join at a time. Press each seam for several seconds before moving on. Leave the most accessible face until last.
  5. Reinforce only if needed. A narrow strip of clear tape over the final outside seams makes a paper die last longer, but it also changes the balance slightly. For probability experiments, use the assembled die gently and compare many rolls rather than expecting perfect manufacturing precision.

Copier paper is suitable for a one-off activity. Card around 160 to 220 gsm gives a sturdier result while remaining foldable. If the printer cannot take card, glue the printed sheet to thin recycled packaging before cutting.

Classroom activities with custom and maths dice

A printable die turns a list into a physical prompt. The result feels unpredictable to a pupil, but the teacher still decides exactly which choices can appear. Print several identical copies for group work, or return to the controls and change the face list for a second die with a different role.

  • Story building: make separate d6 dice for characters, settings, actions, problems, and moods. A group rolls one of each and uses every result in a short scene.
  • Retrieval practice: place unit headings or question stems on a d12 or d20. Pupils roll, explain the topic without notes, then ask a partner to add one missing fact.
  • Sentence work: use faces such as because, although, before, unless, meanwhile, and therefore. The rolled connective must appear in the next sentence.
  • Mental maths: choose seeded operations and print the answer key once. Pupils roll the physical die or the matching on-screen roller, solve the visible operation, and keep a tally of correct answers.
  • Movement breaks: put safe actions and repeat counts on two dice. Roll both to create a brief instruction such as five stretches or three slow turns.
  • Probability comparison: roll a d6 and a d12 the same number of times, record the frequency of each face, and discuss why a short trial rarely looks perfectly even.

Blank faces are useful when pupils should design the choices themselves. Print the net first and write or draw on the flat faces before assembly; decorating an already folded die is much harder.

Printing dice nets at the correct size

A physical net depends on measurement, so print scaling matters. Choose Letter or A4 in the generator, open the print window, and use 100% or Actual size. Turn off Fit to page when the browser or printer offers it. The generator has already left an 8 mm page margin and reduced the maximum face size when a shape would otherwise run off the sheet.

  • Use black and white. Nets are plain black lines on white paper. Solid cut lines are darker than dashed fold lines, so colour ink is unnecessary.
  • Keep each net intact. The page layout places only complete dice in a row. If another copy cannot fit below, it starts on a new sheet instead of being split.
  • Choose a readable face size. Long phrases need more space than pips. Use a larger d6 for sentence prompts and reserve small d20 faces for numerals, brief words, or compact operations.
  • Save as PDF for later. The browser print window can save the same measured pages as a PDF. Keep the visible reprint code with the file when the faces contain seeded maths questions.
  • Test one copy before a class set. Printers handle margins and card differently. Assemble one die, check that labels are readable and tabs meet cleanly, then print the remaining copies.

The on-screen roller uses the same reprint code. Reset its history without changing the code, die type, or dice count to replay the same sequence from the first roll.
